Biography

Benjamin Hoste (b. 1983) is a photographer based in New York. He was born in New Jersey, raised in California, studied mathematics in college, and holds a masters in journalism from the University of Missouri. Photography is a direct and immediate way for him to document the present for future reflection. Rather than seek out decisive moments, he looks to subtract the element of time within his photographs. Maps, data, and geography all play a pivotal role in shaping the development of his work. Additionally, he uses open-ended anthropological questioning practices to elicit organic, primary source perspectives that inform his photographic process, with interview excerpts often presented alongside photographs. His work has been exhibited internationally and published by Time, MSNBC, Der Greif, and Anthropology Now, among others, and is held in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
